Da Capo Winds is a friendly concert band for adults and children.  We are based in Yateley (North East Hampshire) and serve Camberley, Farnborough, Aldershot, Farnham, Basingstoke and the surrounding areas as well as Yateley itself.  We even have members that live as far away as Guildford and Whitehill (near Bordon).  Unlike many bands we do not follow a busy programme of engagements.  Our aim is to “Pursue Musical Excellence” and have a good time doing it.  To this end each rehearsal starts with a musicianship training session that helps us all to improve underlying skills like tuning, musical balance, the ability to play better together etc.  We only carry out a limited number of engagements so that we have enough time to work on the quality of the music we perform.  Our concerts usually take place on a Monday evening with the exception of our Christmas concert which is scheduled for a Saturday afternoon late in December.

Our Christmas concert was a great success.  We played to a packed audience of adults and children and everyone had a wonderful time.  There was a short demonstration of the training systems that we use showing how we developed good tuning and harmonies within the band.  This then led on to the band’s rendition of such items as “Mission Impossible” and a selection of John Williams “Movie Themes” which was second to none.  There was also the first performance of “Hello”, a band item put together by Sara Doodnath who plays Clarinet in the band.  This item included two tunes used at the music school where many of the children in the audience attend.  All got very involved in this and also in “Holiday on Ice” when the entire audience joined in with hand held percussion instruments including jingles, claves, and maracas among other items.  The flute section featured by playing one tune on kazoos and even one tune on tuned beer bottles ...!  It was all great fund and everyone left with a good “Christmas glow”.

We are holding our next PLAY DAY on Sunday 26 February at Yateley School (GU46 6NW).  This event will cater for both adults and children.  There will be a focus on the acoustic scale* (google “acoustic scale” to find out more) and the opportunity to work on a new composition in this key structure.  It will be a great day with lots of musical fun for all.  Tell your friends about it.  The more that come along the better it will be.

*Acoustic Scale

The scale of C acoustic will contain F# and Bb.  This scale has been used extensively since the time of Liszt but is not very well know.  To download a short piano piece by Bartok in the key of G Acoustic click here.  The Simpsons theme tune is in C Acoustic and can be heard (and seen) in various piano versions on YouTube
